Kenya | The Sun

This is the first true Kenya post out of God only knows how many. I have so many wonderful memories and thoughts to share with you about this trip. Tonight I am going to start with the beautiful scenery of the place because what comes to mind when you think of Africa? Hot, desert, poverty, disease? Let's just say this place completely flipped my view of Africa upside down. I am not positive what I was expecting when I arrived in Nairobi, but it definitely wasn't the lush, green mountain sides that I saw.

Everything about Kenya was a surprise: the people, the views, the weather, the hearts. I couldn't imagine a better bunch of people to be with for 3 weeks. I truly felt at home. Every morning I would wake up to a foggy morning and within a few beautiful moments the sun would rise through the fog and fill the sky. There is something about the Kenyan sunrise that makes the morning that much better. And the way the sun would shine on the hillside throughout the day was so spectacular. And then, the sunset. I can't even describe the African sunset to you. This is something you have to see for yourself.

Also, shameless self promotion coming up: You can buy prints of my Kenya/other travel photos here. It would be a great support if you want to purchase one or a few :) 15% of all profits will go to Children of Promis, the organization that I helped with in Kenya. Thanks! xxx

{and I was off!}

Hello again! I am back from Kenya and can't wait to share all the wonderful adventures I have had! This has been the best adventure of my life so I will start at the very beginning! I left for Kenya on June  21 to begin my 3 day journey across the world! Flying is one of my favourite things. I love airports (minus security, but what can you do right?), people watching, the hustle and bustle and just the excitement of the trip. The best thing about airports is thinking about where people are going and why they are traveling. I love creating stories for others.  People can be so interesting if you give them a chance. Other traveling things that rock: the long hours of music listening and reading. I love downloading new albums and books before I travel. Those songs that you listen to on your way somewhere are always special and have wonderful memories attached.

I think it may be a requirement that airports have cool architecture. What are your favourite airports? This trip I got to explore the Doha International Airport for 6 hours, layovers are always a good time for coffee and people watching.

After this busy, crazy week, a nice relaxing weekend is what I am looking for. I had 4 midterms this week. Why do professors think that anyone can do well on midterms after a week break?! Please explain this to me. On Thursday night, after my final midterm, there was a dress up party that my friends and I went to. I have decided that the getting ready part of going out is almost always the best. This week there was also a huge snow storm on March 1st. Hello Spring? At least everything is not covered in a layer of beautiful and fresh snow! My plans for this weekend consist of reading, sleeping and drinking A LOT of tea. Hope you all have a great weekend!

And since I haven't done this in a while (because my life was all exciting and I was traveling), I am going to bring back the senses post.

seeing: snow, snow and more snow

tasting: dark chocolate peanut butter!

hearing: The Monkees- Daydream Believer (RIP Davy Jones <3)

touching: Midterms, and lot of them

smelling: my mango chapstick!

*Sorry for the picture intensive post!*

Tunisia was my first trip to Africa, and it definitely met the expectations. It was a beautiful place surrounded by the ocean. Our first trip in the country was to go see Carthage. Carthage was the home of the Punic during the period of fighting with the Romans. It backs right up to the ocean and is just awe-inspiring. The ruins are still being dug up but you see enough to get the idea of how the Punic people lived. Its neat seeing the places you learn about in history first hand. After Carthage, we headed over to the Medina. The Medina is a city center with 8 doors. It is a walled in complex full of shopping and bartering and people throwing things to buy in your face. Most of the sellers would put a necklace on you and then demand money. It was quite the experience to say the least. In the Medina, there was a rug shop made of hand stitched rugs which “will last 1000 years”. That was the selling point, obviously. The rugs were beautiful, with intricate designs. We ended up buy 3 rugs. You have to help out the Tunisian economy some how, right? Or maybe that is an excuse. The weather in Tunisia was also not the best, but it did clear up till the end of the day. The other place our guide took us was the American cemetery in Tunis. It was so neat to see a monument for all the soldiers who died in pursuit of saving the Tunisians. Again, Tunisia is definitely a place I recommend going.

On a side note, Happy Leap Day! Hope it is awesome :)

This week has been so exciting! My room mate and I signed our lease for our very first real APARTMENT. It is the most perfect place, right in the centre of downtown near school and near places to go out. I am already deciding how to decorate it, and planning fun parties to have! I also won a tea give away, which, if you know me, is possibly the best thing that could ever happen.
In other news, I am headed off to Europe in 2 days! So some fun posts should be coming up :) What is everyone up to this week? And Happy Valentines Day! Hope it is great!

{Parker Fitzgerald}

Parker Fitzgerald has the most amazing photostream on flickr. Well maybe not but i have been looking at it constantly for the past few days. You could probably spend a good week look at the whole thing and still not get through it all. He mainly shoots film, which i love and does Polaroids also. He did a Polaroid project where he took a Polaroid picture everyday and put a quote on it. it is a very neat project that i kind of want to start, except with a digital camera because unfortunately i do not own a Polaroid. His photos are so dreamy and pleasing to the eye. i suggest you check it out! His work has been going around the blogging world quite a lot lately so if you read other blogs you may have seen some of it! (I think i may message him and try to get him to answer some questions that i can post!) I want to start doing a few guest post on my blogs.... if anyone is interested let me know!

{barbie photo shoot}

my sister messaged me this morning needing pictures of Barbie and Ken on a date. well this was strange but sounded like fun and she is my sister so i agreed! she is writing a story about Barbie and Ken for her school newspaper, so i will be published! when i got home from the dentist, my mom and i dressed up barbie and ken and made them go on a date! it was really fun. we even straightened her hair (it didn't even catch on fire!). moral of the story: if you are ever bored set up a barbie photo shoot. you don't have to find people to take pictures of plus you set them just how you want them!
here were a few of the shots!
